Deborah Harrison

Deborah Harrison was born in Yorkshire. She is a contempory sculptor who specialises in stone. Since discovering stone carving she has studied Fine Art and Stone Masonry. She works with the stone's colour and form until 'a kind of skin' is reached. This technique is called 'Carving Direct' which was used by Henry Moore and Brancusi. Her work is inspired by nature, faith and humanity. She carves in a wide variety of types of stone ranging from soapstone through to Italian Carrara Marble.

Her workshop is in Gloucester City Works (home of the Gloucester Scrap Store and Resource Centre) where she also leads carving courses. She also guides quiet 'away days' based on the process of sculpting. Her sculptures can be seen locally with FarOpen Studios, the Cheltenham Open Studios and with Inside-Out at Gloucester Cathedral. She has also exhibited at Stephen's Walbrook in London and Norfolk Cathedral. She has been interviewed on four occassions by BBC Radio Gloucestershire about her pieces which have appeared in news publications including The Metro. She is a founder member of the Cotswold Sculptors Association. She is also involved in projects which aim to bring communities increased access to sculpture. Deborah welcomes bespoke commissions.
